Today I came across a strange Vagrant. He told me his name was Ozymandias. How ridiculous? I know you're wondering what a Vagrant is. It is a person on which the Cap failed, and thier brains go insane. They can't control it, it just happens. Jack almost wanted to be a Vagrant. He thought it might be better to wander as a madman then to serve the Tripods under their control. For, the Tripods needn't consern themselves with the Vagrants, so I can kind of see where Jack is coming from.
Anyway, Ozymandias was whistling a tune, not off-key, like most Vagrants would've whistled. I had been interested in Vagrants since the Capping, and I found myself spending a lot of time wandering around the Vagrant House. This is where I found Ozymandias. I had a lot on my mind, and I figured I could tell him anything. After all, it's not like he would even comprehend a word of it. So I told the odd man about my curiosity about the Tripods. He listened very intently, and after a while started to speak. When he did, it left me in a daze.
He said that I was right to question the Tripods. Although they appear harmless, they really are vile robots. They hunt men like foxes. Humans! They have no mercy, and in some places, they force Capped men into mining metal for their benefit. Remember, the poor people have no control over any of it! Not even their thoughts. Just when I started to think that this man might not actually be a Vagrant, he confirmed my thoughts.
He spoke of a place where men lived free! He called it the White Mountains. He gave me a map and a compass to find my way there. All I had to do was travel south. According to Ozymandias, the trip was going to be long, dangerous, and difficult. Then, he left. I plan to run away from Wherton in one week's time. Maybe someday I'll meet Ozymandias agian in the White Mountains (if I ever make it).
